Garelick mount wont go down

Hi,

I installed a new Garelick 71091 a few weeks ago, and when I went to put
the motor on, it wouldn't go down!! I even stood on the thing and could
only get it to go to the second notch. I'm thinking of cutting one of
the springs but thought I would ask of anyone else has seen this first.

Which motor did you hang on it? Do you know it's weight?

I do not mean to be impudent but did you loosen the two red knobs on the side? Mine goes down fine with an 85 lb motor.

Both sides are loose. I'm even about to try loosening the other nuts to see
if any are holding it up. It goes down about half way, just takes way too much
effort, and I havent been able to get it all the way down. Pat

I suppose it is possible that some of the frame bolts could be too tight, loosen them and let us know.

This is the mod I did to get more downward travel, I could have cut the distance between the old top hole and the new one in half and it would have been better.

PAKing, did you ever solve the problem of getting your motor to go down on the Garelick motor mount ?? I just installed the same motor mount this afternoon and i couldn't get mine to go down either. I tried pushing hard on it and it wouldn't go down. I had the red knobs loose, had the handle out of the notches, etc. On my ride home i was wondering if the trick is to push out (aft) as you are pushing down instead of trying to push more straight down ???

Now that I think of it... I believe that when I got mine the two notched arms had a radius bent into them that rather than facilitating the up and down motion, impinged on the something and impeded the motion. While I was modifying my mount I straightened them and it works wonderfully. Maybe I just "opened" them up a little. I think that was it, I spread the routed out area and they worked fine.

When I first got mine it was very tight and hard to get down. I also have the Honda 9.9. I'm not certain when it happened, because I did nothing special to make it happen, but it works fine now. This has been over the past year.

Hi Bob,

I meant to update my post. Sorry I didn't do it sooner.

First I tried everything... the red nobs, lostening all the bolts, etc, but it wouldn't go down. I would stand on it and push on the stern rail and still couldnt make it go more then a few inches.

I finally cut the bottom spring. I cut both sides and took it off. I think I could have just cut one side of the "bump" in the middle and ended up with half of the origional strength, but I dont think you could then take the cut half off. It now goes up and down fine. No problems. It's a little harder to get up then it should be (add your own joke here), but still easier then the old mount. I would recommend trying to cut only half the spring. That should be enough.

I also cut an inch off the top after I made sure my motor didn't need it. (I dont have Frank's drill press!!) :-)

I'm happy with the mount now. It gets the motor all the way out of the water without having to tilt it.
