Good day, all. I am new to your site and I am very interested in Catalina sailboats. I have yet to buy one but want to know more about them. And this looked like the place to be. I am new to the Jacksonville, Florida area and if there is anyone out there that can enlighten me on these marvelous sailboats, I would be greatly appreciative! Please keep the interesting conversations going. I am learning quite a bit already. And what is this Beer Can Race? Intriguing name.
Hi Ashley, are you looking for a 250 or a 25? Sailgal is in Florida and VERY knowledgeable about the 250, Leon Sisson is also from Florida and frighteningly knowledgeable about the 25. You can look them up in the members link above in the upper right hand corner.
Ah the beer can race... I am sure there are many explanations of the name's heritage. The bottom line is they are usually quasi unofficial races that are not a part of a "regatta". Traditionally they are held on Wed. nights and they are characterized by informality. They are a great place to learn racing and also a great place to train crew, so you find both hard core racers and newbies. I often race in them on our lake and have yet to finish better than last! And lastly, they are a great opportunity to catch a ride on a boat! Just show up and ask.
Welcome to the group and I hope you find a great boat. Check out
www.indiscipline.org to see our boat (Indiscipline 3 is a 1978 Catalina 25) and go to Catalina, go on races, and participate in all our Fleet 7 adventures.
Jacksonville is nearing the point that a fleet might be a possibility. You've already discovered Frog, and the others in that thread will be happy to provide guidence and assist you in your search for a 25 or a 250. I'd suggest that you contact one of them or Leon who is in Cocoa Beach. They could and I'm sure would help you get started.
25's and 250's are great little boats, and the folks on this forum are extremeely helpful as we'all have questions.
So welcome to the group and feel free to contact us anytime you have a question!
Ashley, welcome to the forum and the association. If you are in Jacksonville then you are aware of the 1/2 day and sometimes allday thunder bumpers going on presently in the area. It does not make for great sailing weather, but it has put out most of the forest fires and saved a lot of homes. If you are interested in checking out a C250 you can get in touch with me through the forum EM system and I can give you directions to make a visit to the dock and put an eyeball all over one. If the tide up and the weather decent, we might even take her out for a few runs up and down the lake. Again welcome to the forum.
Welcome to Jacksonville. The river here is a great place to sail. If you are looking to see a 25 Drop me a line . I try to get out 2-3 times a week and just putt around with the family and friends. The summer time t-storms are a fact of life. After the mug race last month we were slammed and had a 30 minute wild ride. These boats and the people who sail them are the best.
I haven't quite completed my research of the Catalina's but I believe a 25 is my true desire. Thank you for the information regarding the beer can race. I must check one of those out very soon.
Thank you for your help, AW

The river is gorgeous and looks like a blast. The weather is very capricious here lately. Summer in Florida, yes? This will be my first but I am learning quite swiftly.

There are a several 25's around the Jax area. I wanted a late model wing keel 25 and found it over in Tampa. I keep it on a mooring at the Naval Air Station marina. I also have a trailer. The whole package was reasonable and will hold its value. We paricipated in my first race last month and had a blast. I am going to trailer down to the keys next month for a week of sailing. There is also a local sailing club.
Your boat is lovely. Thank you for the information.
Cheers, AW

Sorry to be late greeting you but we've had some phone & modem problems here after my neighbors house took a lightning strike. They are not kidding about the thunder boomers. The top half of a big live oak is now laying in their back yard.
I would also like to offer you an opportunity to check out a C-250. Chick-a-pea is close to Frog and Tom. She is just south of Julington Creek. The St. J. is a wonderful place to sail. Kinda reminds me of that Dixie Chicks song Wide Open Spaces . I've been to a couple of the Beer Can Races. I just fall in were I can with the fleet because I can never get out in time to start. This afternoon had some wind, so maybe it will hold for tomorrow too.
