I am a newbe to the C25 although I have years of sailing on other craft, I bought a Catalina 25 fin keel with an inboard, and plan to sail it in San Francisco Bay. Does anyone know the best place to launch, dock and sail from in the bay? I plan on going the first week of October and would like information on the weather and the seas. Does anyone have stories about the bay that would save me some not so fun times so the wife and I can enjoy the trip. I am now sailing it on Lake Mead Nevada but have a great trailer and want to venture beyond the desert scap of Nevada. We were also thinking about Dana Point to Catalina. Any guidance would help alot. Thanks Bob
Hmmm... have never launched or stayed in a marina on SF Bay but I know there's some folks who hang out here that sail SF Bay, I imagine they'll check 'in' here after the weekend.
At any rate, here's a couple useful sites to get you started... there's certainly plenty of facilities to choose from.
Some San Francisco Bay Launch Ramps: 1. Richmond 2. Berkeley Municipal 3. Emeryville 4. San Leandro Municipal 5. Grand Marina (Oakland Estuary) 6. Vallejo
Recommend you call ahead to see if there are time limits imposed on how long you can park your truck and trailer. In the last few years, at least two of the public Municipal marinas, Richmond and Emeryville, have gone into private ownership and the new owners are charging for stuff like use of the launch ramps and parking lot that used to be free .
As for Dana Point to Catalina (about 39 nm to Two Harbors), you may want to consider launching at LA Harbor (about 21 nm to Two Harbors). While probably not as scenic as Dana Point, it's a bit closer and there's less chance that you'll have to beat or motor into the wind to get to the island. The ramp is located in the far corner of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium parking lot -- map to boat ramp.
Check out places on the Estuary. I'm not sure which ones have the lifts (it may be Grand Marina). I know there are lifts near Svendson's yard. It would be much easier, I think, to use the lift with a fin keel rather than a ramp. The Estuary is a nice start plus your choice of South or North of the Bay Bridge depending on how you feel you can handle the conditions. Also you can dock at restaurants on the Estuary when you're hungry. Try Chevy's for Mexican or Scotts on the Oakland side for a nicer menu and stroll Jack London square. Be very careful if you try to go around San Leandro Creek exit as the channel is tricky, very narrow and shallow in spots.
Come and join our Fleet 7 San Diego - Oceanside - Dana Point - Two Harbors (Catalina) - Santa Barbara Island cruise this August. You can launch anywhere and join us along the way. We are leaving Mission Bay August 2. I will be returning August 20. Most of our families are taking the ferry from Long Beach to 2 Harbors.
