'78 C25, standard rig. I'm having difficulty identifying the brand of head - want to get a rebuild kit. Can't see any model info - is there a standard model that was used,do I have to remove it to get at model info? Someone give me the poop, please. Thanks, Jack
If you search the forum you will find that 9 out of 10 poopers believe that a head should be replaced rather than rebuilt. It seems that the cost is pretty much the same and the experience will be much better.
I just replaced mine; I have a newly acquired C25 1979 sail number 744. I got a Jabsco toilet from West Marine. The original was a Jabsco, and the rebuild kit from CD was $49.95 and 4 to 5 weeks out, and so I opted for the whole toilet for $109.00. Fit well with just a few holes drilled, and the inlet and outlet hoses needed to be replaced due to the reposition ( to the side appx. 2 inches ). I'm glad I did; it's a nice clean head now. Had to remove the holding tank and clean out under it though, due to the clean out hose was loose
Hey Steve, you might actually have a 1978 boat. My Sail number is 765 and it is a '78 not '79. Somebody else might be able to confirm this, others follow these things more closely. It really doesn't matter, both are of good vintage. Welcome to the Forum!!
I replaced my original '77 Par head with a Jabsco from WM for $109. The replacement pump shaft I needed was $106 from Jabsco, who bought out Par, so I did like most here and replaced it all. Drilled three holes for new lag bolt location and new hoses. Much easier to use. The folks at Jabsco stated that a Jabsco pump assembly would work, but the base unit is no longer available and no rebuild kit. Even if you find a repair kit, if anything else breaks or malfunctions, the repair/part will end up costing more than a new head (without 25 years of wear and tear from normal use).
Raritain Engineering make the best manual low dollar head that I know of. The others despite names that have a long history in the marine business do not hold up well. The PH 2 or maybe now 3 is a trouble free reliable poop gobbler. Also it gets along with minimum water which is handy if you are using a holding tank. Rebuild kits are cheap and comprehensive. This is the best I know of for less than $4000.00 (its unbelievable to me that our big boat customers will spend that kind of money for a head). Dave

Yes, you simply close the through hulls and go about it.
If you go with a head made by the same manufacturer and your hoses are in good condition, it won't take much time to disconnect the old head, bolt in the new one and reattach the hoses with new hose clamps. I would replace the vented loop in any event since the air check valve at the top, neccessary to break any siphon, is likely to be clogged with "matter" or otherwise defective. Certainly you can replace the old head in far less time than it takes to do a complete rebuild which is a lousy, filthy, dreadful, crummy, disgusting, miserable job.
