I recently purchased a 77 Cat25 with swing keel that is presently in the water. After shopping around for a trailer I found a manufacturer that will build one at a reasonable price. The manufacturer is asking for the maximum distance from the bottom of the retracted keel to the bottom of the hull or the height of the exposed keel when retracted. To get this information I will have to take the boat out of the water which will be costly at this time. I estimated the maximum height to be 20". Does anyone know the height? Thank you.
I don't know if I can help or not, but I'll give it a shot. Here is a photo of my swing keel with the boat on her trailer (this was taken before I worked on the bottom paint, so it's a little embarrassing!):
What I'm hoping you can see in the photo is that the swing keel has been lowered so that it is resting on the front axle, and the end of the keel is butted up against the rear axle. I'm not aware of any harm in doing this, but it sure gave me peace of mind knowing that if the winch fell apart at the bow, the boat wouldn't ride back on the rollers and end up in the middle of the interstate!
I'm not sure of the measurement, but I'll try to get a rough estimate for you this afternoon. I won't be able to get an exact measurement because I'm replacing the swing keel cable, and I've got no way to raise the keel right now. Anyway, maybe this will help.
Just went out and measured it. About 20" from bottom of keel to hull. My EZ Loader trailer has an aluminum plate for the keel to rest on which is 23" below the hull. Hope that helps.
Buzz: My trailer has a safety chain and hook mounted near the bow eye. In addition, I always use a heavy duty rachet strap over the cockpit and down to the trailer on both sides anytime I'm on the road.
'Just measured the keel as best I could ... I conservatively estimate it to be 24 inches. It was difficult to measure, so I'd bet the actual distance is shorter than that when the keel is fully retracted.
Tim ... Yep, I've got a safety chain, too, but I don't trust it ... I have visions of the padeye ripping out of the bow, and my boat launching itself into the middle of the highway. Your tie-down strap sounds like a good idea ... think I'll do that, too ... 'can't be too careful.

Not entirely sure what I'm looking at in your photo. Looks a lot like my situation, where the boat is not forward enough therefore the keel drops down on top of the retainter.
