We're considering putting carpet in our C250 wing keel; however, we use the very handy space near the keel bolts to keep our duct tape and small tool kit. Any ideas how to keep this space easily accessable and still add carpet?
Once you have laid the carpet take the hatch cover off and use it to trace it's outline where it fits. Cut that piece out and either velcro or glue it onto the hatch. You might want to use a soldering gun or other hot tool to seal the edges of the cut out edges to reduce fraying.

Actually we are trying not to attach anything to the wood cover, but you did give me a different good idea - we could velcro the carpet down around the edges of the opening.
I too just installed a carpet in my 84 swing keel. What I did was buy some brown wrapping paper to use as a template. I cut and taped as needed to get (1) entire piece. It came out to roughly a 4' x 12' piece.
At the two access panels I planned to trace the openings, cut the carpet, and re-install the panels while having the carpet cover the screw holes. This way the panels would help hold the carpet down. Any elevation changes between the panel and the surrounding floor I anticipate glueing a bull nose moulding to ease the transition.
