Been away for a few months , but now readying Irish ayes. It seems that my anchor light wire has somehow severed along its run to the cabin top connector. I do not get any contunity or power using a meter.
Question is can I somehow use the same deck penetration, when running a new wire from the panel? If so how do I deal with the bulkhead.
Is it just simpler to put a switch between the anchor and steaming light and run off of (1) wire?
Frank - It is most likely that the problem in the anchor light circuit is at the deck plug or the switch panel. Try to find and correct the problem at those points first before you run a new wire. It is unlikely (although not impossible) that the wire broke mid-run since it is embedded between the inner cabin liner and outer deck molding between the switch panel and deck connector.
It is possible that water got to the wiring at the deck plug and wicked back up the wire under the insulation, causing significant, voltage robbing corrosion along the way. This would be evident if you have voltage at the switch, but not where the wire contacts the deck connector.
The previous owner of my boat ran new wire from the switch to the deck connector. It runs through the cabin along the hull/deck joint, and is essentially hidden from view by the little "lip" that sticks down. It goes through small holes drilled in the upper corners of the bulkheads. It is more visible in the head, running along the edge where the bulkhead meets the overhead deck liner, but it looks clean. I'm guessing he drilled the hole through the deck from above (i.e. with the deck connector removed).
I had similar voltage/corrosion problems in the wire to the bow lights and ran new wire for that (except running it all the way into the anchor locker along the hull/deck joint).
Thanks for the info I believe thats what may of happened here. The wires penetrating the deck show signs of bad corrosion. I do not have enough wire left to solder a good joint so I may route the wires as you explained. Any idea as to how much angle I need to put on the drill bit so as to penetrate the bulkhead withing the head area/
Frank -- I don't think you want the hole through the deck to "penetrate the bulkhead". Instead, the hole enters the head about 1/2" in front of the bulkhead between the saloon and the head so that the wires can be neatly run down the joint between the bulkhead and the cabinceiling. There appears to be little if no angle to the hole. But I would check it out on your boat before drilling, maybe from through the head window with a helper down below. Good luck.
