I am considering installing a pedestal guard from Edson (about 2.5 BU) in the future. The pedestal seems to be a convenient handhold for crew and of course their hands end up right on the compass glass every time. It also seems to be the best choice for me to mount my handheld GPS and Fishfinder, each one has it's own swivel mount so it could be seen from anywhere in the cockpit and is easily removable. Has anyone installed one

We thought about it, but the price is robbery! It would be a nice place to mount instruments. If you install it - please let us know how it goes.

I installed a bicycle handlebar mount on top of my pedestal guard. My handheld GPS MAPS 76C just snaps onto it and it works just great.

The pedestal guard was one of my first installations. It has been very handy on those windy spring days. I also use a Garmin bicycle mount on the pedestal guard to mount my Garmin GPSMAP 76S. It is much cheaper than the side mount Garmin GPS mount, and puts the GPS handheld unit at the top of the pedestal where it is easily viewed.

Go for the expediture. You'll be glad you did.

Fair winds and safe sailing.

Charlie,

The Pedestal Guard was on of the first additional equipment add ons to my 250 WK. It is easy to do and is really useful for manuvering and security in the cockpit while under way.

I also added the pedestal guard when I bought my boat and am glad I did. It does give a good handhold when needed. I was also able to install all the engine controls as well as a chart plotter.

Charlie, I added the pedestal guard after I had done some cold sailing in the new boat. This mod the General even approved of after she saw one on a H...... boat at the local dealers. It is a great body stabilizer in rough seas. All the parts, instruments included came to 8.5 BU's.

I will add my two cents worth. My pedestal was added when the steering was installed. Since then I have put on a few mods to it as you can see in the picture. The instrument panel was made from a sheet of that white board, and all items purchased from West Marine, including the Garmin GPS. Notice the holder for the radio down low, and the cell phone holder. A Edson table is also attached to the front side, with drink holders. All in all it is very useful and makes a great hand hold.

Okay, I have the pedestal guard in hand. Now, what is the best method to cut it to length? What length is best? I realize this is personal preference, I was thinking of making it just a little taller than the top of the wheel so that the pedestal cover will still fit.

Does everyone use the guard tubing to run wiring? I don't want to weaken it with too many holes. I was thinking of one on each side. GPS power and extra wires for future Autopilot on one side, and Fishfinder power and transducer cable on the other side. I will probably locate the holes just below the Pedestal plate. Is this SOP (standard operating procedure) ?

Any info will definitely help. Thanks.

P.S. I will post pictures when complete.

Which guard did you get? Regardless you don't cut it off. Mine was the 54" straight and sticks above the pedestal about 14". Believe me when I say you will need the room for adding instrument pods and other things, plus you will want handhold room at the top for moving around the cockpit in rough weather.
I ran both power and instrument wiring on the left side only. This was to keep the transducer cable runs the shortest I possibly could without having to purchase cable extensions.
It would be nice if Catalina put races in the C250 for running additional wiring and instrumentation like they do in their larger boats.
As far as I know it is each to his/her own for running cables. If there is an SOP for running cables I don't know it.
Just take your time and lube up the grommets and poles or they will stick and break. I used petroleum jelly to grease the pole and they slide on no problems.
Good luck and post some pictures when your finished so we all can learn.

I would not cut the tubing either. I still use my "Cover", but it just does not cover the "Wheel" any more. I feel as long as the instruments and compass are covered, that is what is important. The tubing is quite thick, so I would not worry about putting holes in it. Where you put them will depend on what "Pod" you use. The holes are drilled inside the Pod so all the wiring is concealed. Just make sure the hole is big enough so the wires don't chafe. I have holes in both tubes and am not worried about it's strength at all. I have the Remote Start Key, safety shut off, overheat light/buzzer, as well as a Chart Plotter all installed in the pod with no problems except that the "Tubes" are full!

I purchased the 54" straight guard with the simple stainless pedestal plate and I will leave it the original length. I didn't get the instrument pod. I have some scrap pieces of teak that I plan to fashion into a simple platform for the GPS and Fishfinder. We'll see how it turns out. Thanks again for everyone's inputs.
