Hi all,

My 150 Jib/staysail/jenny/whachamacalit(CDI FF-4 Roller Furler) is at the loft to have luff foam installed. I want better performance when I have to furl than I have been getting. I can't afford to replace it with the 135 I should have bought.

Any tips, what I should expect compared to not having the foam, etc.?

Yeah, yeah, I know, compromised performance, not as powerful as hank-on, etc. I've got it, I've done it, so what can I expect?

you'll be happy to take as much as 25% out and still have good sail shape.
i have one and would not do without.

My next headsail will have a foam luff. Today, I went out in strong winds with 30+ mph gusts and my partially furled headsail looked like a mini spinnaker as it bulged out in the middle. Needless to say, my windward performance was horrid.

Try this if you don't have a foamed luff. Purchase a six or eight foot, if you can find it, piece of two inch foam pipe insulation, split it down the seam and the next time you roll it up slide the pipe insulation over the furler as high as you can reach. You will be suprised how much it helps maintain the sail shape. Since I am short I use the bow pulpit to help increase the height of the insulation.
