Doing it yourself with a brush? I recommend Easypoxy.
Here's what I've done in the past with good success.
Wash the boat thoroughly with Dawn detergent and rinse. (Dawn is really good at degreasing and de-waxing).
Mask off the edges of the area to be painted with 3M blue tape. Lightly sand with 400 grit to break the surface glaze. If you have large areas to do you may want to wet sand.
Wipe down with special Pettit prep solvent. Wipe down with tack rag. Use a 3" foam roller to apply the Easypoxy.
Follow immediately with a foam brush right behind the roll-on to 'knock-down' the surface.
On large areas it works better with 2 people, one applying the paint and one 'knocking it down' as you need to work quickly to keep a wet edge.
Professionals will use Imron, Awlgrip, Sterling etc.
Hi we just did our topside paint @ Easter with Easypoxy. Worked great.
We were given some hints from a pro painter in our yard.
We sanded with 220 gr then primed then blocked again with 400gr then wiped down with a tack rack.
Thin with Penetrol to about 15-20% depending on the temperature. Don't even try to paint if the hull is warm to the touch. The paint will flash off before it can flow out smooth.
Ditto on the 3 in foam roller but we tipped off with a 4 in badger hair brush that we kept dry and wiped clean.
Put the paint on thin.. it is not at all like wall paint... it is much thinner and will run ferociously if too thick.
Don't over work the paint, let it self level and the results will be great.
