My wife and I are starting to race our Catalina 25 and last race we got beat by a Mcgregor 26..by handicap numbers.My friend, who has owned and raced Catalina 25s says that the phrf #'s are 222, I thought I saw them higher here in the forum. We have a TR/SK and we were sailing with our 170% sail. Would we have been better to use our 150% sail? We have raced our Catalina 22 for the years that we owned her and now that we have moved up, we want to race this boat. Our friend suggested we protest the phrf numbers at the end of the next race. Any help would be appreciated.

I think 222 sounds right for the tall rig... 228 for the standard.

Which model 26 were you racing? The MacGregor 26 "classics" are a fast boats on flat water... especially the daggerboard model. They should have had an equal or lower PHRF rating to yours.

Hard to say... I haven't seen a C25 raced with anything bigger than a 150.

My standard rig swing keel rates 240. There's a tall rig at my marina that rates 225. There's a 6 second / mile penalty associated with the 170 genoa, but I think you're definitely better off with the 170. I've got one on order after being beaten repeatedly by an otherwise identical boat.

Alan - where do you race?
In the PHRF Handbook, the McGregor daggerboard rates 210 - 213 and the other Mc anywhere from 210 to 234. We rate the latter at 216 versus the C25 TR at 222.

Thanks for your responses, We race on an inland lake, Grand Lake St. Marys in Ohio, rated by Sailing Magazine as one of the 15 best Sailing Lakes in America. We have a VERY high level of racing talent in our club in cluding a previous Catalina 25 national champion and a previous Catalina 22 national champion. I am not sure which model McGregor it was except that it is a newer model-white hull/black windows.I am going to check and make sure they are rating us at least 222. Thanks for the Information, I will let you know.

There are two tall rig, fin keel C-25's. TNT rates 225, while Sea Dog, with a roller furler gets 231. There's a MacGregor with centerboard that rates 234.

Yes Sea Dog is rated 231 and we do really well ;). While on the other hand my sk sr rates 240 on the bay. lol.

Thanks for All the Information, I have a call into our race fleet chairman as to what they have us phrf ed as. I like the idea of 225 or higher. I HATE the thought of being beat out by a McGregor

Well I got the Bad news,

, we lost to the McGregor by... ONE SECOND

this was not done by PHRF but by Portsmith! which also figures in wind rating Etc.This leads me to another couple of questions which I will post as another topic..Thanks ALL !

Isn't Portsmouth a handicap system best used by multihulls?

Milby uses this handicap system on his lake. Maybe he will comment.
I think his Portsmouth # is around 91.5 for a TR/FK.
