With my swept spreaders, I find the main on the end of the spreader when I have the mainsheet WAY out (my little ones perfer flat sailing and that sometimes mean sailing this way).
Is there anything I can do to protect my main from damage from doing this? Will a "patch" at the contact point detract from the sail's performance? What oher solutions can anyone recommend (besides leaving the children home)?
This site is a GREAT resource full of VERY helpful folks.
Spreader boots alone may solve your problem. I lay the sail against the spreader boots going downwind fairly regularly and have no damage. If you need to bleed the sail to keep the boat flat so often that you are concerned with chafe after putting them on, you should probably reef!
