Somewhere in my twisted soul resides the urge to wander off shore, possibly beyond the safety net of VHF.....first in little steps, possibly this fall when I take the third Lady to warmer climes for the winter.

Now, we don't want to get into a full blown SSB installation, what with the budget being the way it is after the lightning strike. So, the question is, does anyone know of a simple off the shelf SW/HF radio, (with digital tuning for exact frequencies) where I can start getting familiar with the off shore weather broadcasts. It does not have to be 12V, as the inverter works well. While we're on the subject, where is a good place to find a list of all the frequencies people use out there?

Well, Oscar, it might be time for you to join the Cruising World forum... although you may be chagrinned to have them laugh at you a little. That's sort of the way they are over there. Dumb questions (not that yours are) are sometimes subject to some abuse.

That's not to say nobody here will have some good answers, although I certainly won't. You're probably "outgrowing" most of us on this coastal cruiser site.

BTW, how about a sat phone in case you really need some help?

Hi Oscar,

If you are interested in just "lurking", an inexpensive SW/HF/AM/FM receiver might be the ticket. Many manufacturers sell these. I have a Sangean receiver that is compact, and works with either AC or DC.

As far as where to listen, maybe do a search listing "short wave" or HAM radio. Here's a link to one such website.
