I'm considering the purchase of a wind speed / direction indicator. I've noticed that a few of us have them already. Looking on Sailnet, there are several models available: Standard Horizon ($604), B&G ($614), and Navman ($359). The Navman has two bullet points: that it can do real and apparent wind when connected to an NMEA device, and that it offers real and apparent wind speeds.
It would seem a no-brainer to buy the cheaper Navman device if it can do both real and apparent wind speeds. But does it require additional hardware?
What is involved in installing such a device? I assume that the mast must come down, a wire must be fished through the conduit, and a hole drilled in the deck?
What about wireless devices? Does the transducer run on batteries? If so, how long do the batteries last? How reliable are they?
I'd appreciate any input on this.

The mast does not HAVE to come down....you can do it from a bosuns chair, but it's a lot of hassle getting the tools up there, working accurately and, if you drop the drill on the guy who's got your life in his hands....
I installed the Navman wind instrument about 6-8 months ago. I paid a yard almost $1,000 to take down the mast, install the transducer at the top and add conduit in the mast. Oh, got all new turnbuckles too.
Anyway, the Navman works perfectly when hooked up to a gps. It does read both aparent and true wind. Simple 2 wire hook up to gps.
Here is something to think about. The Raymarine/Sinbad wind instruments are designed for heavy duty use. Purhaps crossing oceans is in your plans but I am pretty much staying close to shore. I have seen the home weather station systems with remote wind speed and direction advertised for around $100+. What do you all think of this on the top of our masts?? The wind vane and speed paddles look like they would work.
