Since Hunters don't have backstays (like B-17's) I was always wary of the integrity of the rig. So I was wondering, has anybody have any information on rigs failing due to lack of backstays?
I like having 6 side stays, backstay and forestay for a total of 8 stays, instead of 3 stays on a Hunter. Maybe it's because I don't know any better, or maybe it's because I do.
I've told my story several times about the H-240 backing out of its slip very slowly and catching a shroud on a piling... Suffice to say, not a pretty sight--fortunately the mast ended up on the foredeck (in a couple of pieces). I helped unrig it, and was amazed by the light duty rig and mast.
The B&R rig probably does OK as long as nothing "unusual" happens.
