I'm wanting to install a depth finder on my 250 Wing Keel. My plan is to epoxy the transducer to the inside of the hull (somewhere) so not to drill holes. I did this on my MAC and it worked fine. I was wondering where others might have installed theirs.

Also any ideas where to mount the depth finder unit itself. Anyone come up with a swing type mount, so it can be stored inside the cabin and swung around to the compainionway area? I would like to see any pictures.

Thanks
Tom

Most C25 owners that I know of have placed there transducers under the cockpit. It's the flatest spot and easy to get to. I on the other hand, mounted the transducer in the bow behind the holding tank (1988 model w/holding tank under the v-birth. I did this for one reason and one reason only - 23 feet (C25 LWL) is a long way from finding out your about to hit a shallow spot. I mounted through the hull however, which caused a problem with wedges to fill the gaps and liberal amounts of caulk. I have not had a leak in 15 years. You should have seen my wifes face though, when she saw that 2" hole in the bottom of my brand new boat . Anyway, I would place the transducer as for forward as your cable will allow and still get a signal through the hull. My experience with power boats is that it will not send through the hull if the transducer is cradled in a "V".

I also had some trepidition regarding drilling a hole in the bulkhead for the depth instrument. I ultimately mounted it in the bulkhead to keep the interior head-knocker free and the companionway clear.

I'm sure it will work out whichever way you decide to mount everything. Think ahead though. You may want to add things in the future and somehow correct past indiscretions.

I had the factory put mine in (I was too chicken to drill into a brand new hull). The depth & knotmeter thru-hulls are forward of the keel, ~4" on either side of the centerline, and about 8" forward of the back bulkhead of the v-berth storage area. This give it a fairly flat surface for mounting and easy access to pull the knotmeter for cleaning. Any water that gets in when you pull the sensors goes right to the bilge.

The display is about 2/3 up on the starboard side of the cabin bulkhead near the companionway. You give up the flat surface to recline against, but it is readily visible from anywhere in the cockpit. I installed a compass on the same side just above the knot/depth display so I still have the port side clear for the admiral to recline on & supervise my efforts. :-)

Our transducer is under the v-berth. I'm not sure how that would work with the water tank since the tank on our '97 is on the starboard side. I would definitely prefer my transducer mounted as forward as possible.

Our display is on the starboard bulkhead (like Jeff's). We also have our GPS mounted there. Easily seen in the cockpit & easy to run the electrical since its not far from the panel.

My depth and speed tranducers are both installed just forward of the fresh water tank. I drilled the holes on each side of the centerline and have had no problems. I had heard that putting them behind the keel could cause mis-readings due to turbulence.

I have two transducers (a depth transducer and Speed and Temp) mounted just forward of the fresh water tank in the V Berth. Side by side and works great and no problems. I had them installed when the boat was hauled and the yard arranged for the installation.

Sounds like we are pretty much doing the same thing.

If you can spare the boat units & are interested, give the Raymarine ST 60 TriData setup a look. This incorporates depth, knotmeter, & other nifty functions. The knotmeter sensor has a nice gasket that minimizes the amount of water that comes in when you pull it for cleaning or to install the (included) dummy plug.

Best of luck with your project.

Tom,

I agree with Jeff. If you want to keep your bulhead clean and uncluttered, get the tri-data. I a staunch Standard Horizon customer, but the tri-data makes a lot of sence.

I, much like Jeff, didn't want to be drilling holes in the hull of my new boat, so I had the dealer install the Speed/Depth. I also thought he would know optimal location for the install. Mine are below the companionway inside the rear berth compartment about 6"-8" in. They are easily accessible there for regular cleaning. I had the Tridata installed and it is next to a compass on the starboard bulkhead. Easy-to-see for the helmsman and out-of-the-way of the companionway. So far, I am very pleased with this arrangement.
