I used Cetol on the stairs, and conventional varnish elsewhere in cabin. If you decide to change the wInch mount washers, be sure that whatever you use is large, rigid and strong -- those are heavily loaded parts.

i am not sure if i need a wench washer?? and after just after attending a "talk like a Pirate Day" party I am not which wench you are talking about!!!!
The stairs on my old boat (#1205) were finished with 3 coats of Cetol, as was all of the interior wood. Since Cetol is slippery if it gets wet, I put one of those white plastic self-adhesive traction pads from West Marine on each of the steps for safety. In the summertime, I go swimming at least once a day, so the stairs are often dripped on and wet. Used inside the boat's cabin, where it is not exposed to direct sun, I would expect Cetol to last at least 10 to 15 years, maybe longer? And it vastly improved the look of the boat's 20 year old interior wood trim and bulkheads, which were looking faded and a little dingy. CAUTION: Cetol puts out pretty powerful fumes; if you use it inside a boat, open everything - all hatches, the pop-top, and rig a large box fan in the companionway to blow fresh air into the boat while you work, and/or use a respirator with filtration rated for oil-based paint vapors.
