My '81 has all the instruments " flush dash mounted" in the cockpit. I don't know if this was a Catalina option or if they were installed by the original owner. Each one is mounted with a 4" in. hole. I would like to replace the depth finder which no longer works. Does anybody know of any this size?

I believe that most instruments were installed by the commissioning dealer or by one of the previous owners. Antares also had one of the large 4" hole installations, which I know was installed by the dealer. The instrument is still available, but pricey and limited in capabilities. Therefore, I purchased a RayMarine Bi-Data system and installed it using circles made of 1/2" Starboard on the interior and exterior cabin walls.

Using a scroll saw I cut the outside diameter of the Starboard to be 1/2" larger than the existing 4" diameter hole, and then cut a 1 1/2" diameter "donut hole" for installation of the new instrument using a drill-mounted hole saw. The Starboard was mounted using 4200 and self-tapping screws. The new instrument was mounted according to the directions. All in all, it looks very shipshape and, so far, no leaks or problems.

I too had the problem of big holes and little guages to replace them with. I took a teak winch pad and cut the thickness down to about 1/2 inch thick, and then drilled a hole for the guage to fit through. it was painted with Cetol to match everything else. On the back side, I took the other half of the thickness of the winch pad and backed the guage up with that. Looks nice and have not had any problems. I have one other guage to replace that same way.

I recently installed a Horizon DS45 depthsounder and I seem to recall it required a 4" hole. You can probably check the Standard Horizon site or the WM (or other) catalog for specs.

I recently replaced my compass with a smaller diameter one. My solution was I bought a piece of 1/4 inch think teak at West Marine and using a hole saw cut a hole the size of my new compass, then measured out 3/4 inch and cut and routed the edge. I completely sealed the ring of teak with Spar varnish and installed it. It looked so good I broke the seal on my other two gauges and did the same thing to them. The outside bulkhead now looks teriffic.

Do you have picture?
i have the problem that my compas sticks out from the bulkhead so that my wife cant lean back and get some sleep when we are heeling to that side
