I chase other boats incessantly. This day I was chasing the past Commodore in his Catalina 28. I love the Catalina 28. As he and I worked our way toward the dam we past to either side of an O"Day 25. The current commodore's husband saw me when we were coming down the lake and gave chase in the Beneteau 305. A the moment The picture was taken from the 28 I was holding off the 305, but he did get by a few minutes later. The picture is poor but it was nice of Rob to take it.

The best looking boat in my marina is a Catalina 28. I tried to procure one for myself last year, but was unsuccessful.

We finally got to climb around a new C28 this week. Beautiful & well thought out although I haven't been able to sail one yet. The 28 just might be our next boat. Anyone have any opinions they'd like to share?

Okay, you got me started again!!

IF I had lots of money (which I don't w/two in college)......

That 3-foot-itis again. But what a gem. But what a great price on her. Okay, I'll buy a lotto ticket because that's the only way I'd swing this. Of course, I COULD sell the house. Can't trailer this one, though.

Mine is paid for, trailerable, tough on the forehead (bonk!), easy to sail, fun to sail, paid for, fun, can afford it because it's paid for....repeat this again...fun, paid for, bonk!

This one's on the east coast. Lucky for me, I guess. But thanks for the link anyway, Frank

The first boat we looked at seriously (1970-somthing Pearson 26) was at Matthews Point Marina, the same broker offering the C28 in the link above. Seemed like a really nice place to call home for a boat. Maybe if I still lived in Raleigh...

Very nice. I'm thinking I like that see-through hatch cover over the V-berth. Sure takes away that dungeon look up front. Just might have to put that on the upgrade list for my C25....since my buying a C28 anytime soon isn't going to happen.

Hi all,

Explain it to me please. No sarcasm intended, I just don't get buying a new-style 28 for $39K when you can get a fair-to-good condition original style C30 for $25K.

There is an '85 C30 shoal-keel in poor condition next to me, no sails, that I might could buy for $2-4K. (Kirsten would divorce me, even if I split the cost with Buddy Paul. So I won't.)

After looking over a number of options for SF Bay, I think the C30 fin would be the hot ticket for durability, comfort in our chop, interior space, speed, etc. At 5ft 3in draft you could still take it up to Stockton or Sacramento...and properly prepared, I would not hesitate taking it up or down the coast or to the Farrallones.

It is the difference between a great deal on an old style design or paying market value for a modern design. The walk out transom, the aft head, open layout real aft double, modern rig, more affordable sails, more easily moved, advanced resins. For me they are the most affordable nicest boat Catalina makes, an old 30 is just that and they have maintenance issues that make our spreader base look like a joke. Do you want wooden spreaders? Truth is, if I ever do move up a cheap 30 is more likely than a 28 but I would rather have the 28.

It's not a tall rig though (I checked). There is a tall rig in Hilton Head, SC for similar money. Problem is we can't really buy for another couple years.

I'm struck by how much bigger the 28 seems than our 250K, though its gain is only three feet in length. In particular its displacement and ballast (3500 lbs to my 1050!) give the 28 a sort of cruiseworthy gravitas. My family lives quite happily on the 250 for five or six days at a stretch - the 28 looks like a five or six month boat by comparison. Never hurts to dream.

The extra ballast & displacement is what's drawing us. We get beat up pretty badly with 3' & 4' choppy waves on the Chesapeake. We'd like a boat that could be a little more comfortable in those conditions. The 28 seemed well thought out with excellent engine access & a few more comforts (like HOT water). The storage is not great, but better than the 250. The v-berth is short though (okay for me at 5'2", but no good for Dan at 6'+ although the back berth was okay for him. The extra room is really due to the width. I don't get the in mast furling main on the anniversay edition though - I don't want to give up my battened main. The CYS salesperson said they're selling most (like 80%) of their new boats with furling main.
