Now that we have the ?to hulls? removed and replaced, what?s the general wisdom on gate valves? My boat has 2 fresh water type brass screw shut off valves. I see marelon and bronze seacocks as well as one lever bronze ball valves. What?s the plan now?
2. No backing plate. The hull is very thick at this point of the hull and there is little force on the fitting. Some others here will say they used a backing plate. In my opinion this is over kill.
3. the goop put on plumbing joints is more for lubrication then for sealing. If the joint leaks when properly tightened then the fittings are faulty. I use the stuff so that in the future I can get the joints apart.
4. Excellent question. I haven't replaced the scupper thru-hulls. There is practically no force acting on the these thru-hulls. They don't even touch the water when the boat is in the dock. That is going to be a judgement call for your comfort level. The later model C25's don't have this type of scupper. Take a good grip on the brass pipe and give a yank. If there is no give.......

1. Assuming you are using a 1/2" mushroom thru-hull, what type of valve will you connect to it? Seacocks or Ball Valves? Bronze or Marelon?
2. If you are using seacocks, how are they attached to the thru-hull? Looking at them in the West Marine catalog they look like the are designed to be screwed on to the fitting all they way down to the hull. Additionally, the catalog doesn't list a 1/2" seacock.
3. I've read posts where people have recommended bronze ball valves on the thru-hulls, but the bronze ball valves on page 525 of the catalog have a note that states, "These are ball valves, not seacocks, and are not intended to be screwed onto a straight-thread thru-hull. They are for inline applications onboard." What type of ball vavle is acceptable?
I still have all the maralon Ball valves. I can either use those or The bronze ball valve. Seacocks are not the same as ball valves and the valve interior is not the same. Im glad you brought up the question about what West Marine said. I will however probably use bronze ball valves for the 1/2" and 1" connections. On the 2" head discharge Im staying with the original maralon valve due to price. My main concern wasn't the valves but the to hull pipe. I think the maralon valves should be ok. As you can see the condition of my to hull was really bad.
