has anyone tried to fasten the furler to the a frame. then either up or down the mast?
i have a harken with the aluminum foil and am wandering if you kept enough tension if that would be adequate? given this situation: mast is going up. mast is bolted in itsbase and somewhat elevated in the rear mast support.now i go to pull up the "a" frame, how do i get the furler which needs to remain somewhat straight up to the "a" frame under tension? shouldi stand the "a" frame up use a halyard and lash it around the foil and then pull it up to the frame> doyou think this would work or do you want me to be the experamental?
just thoughts the tall rig is considerably heavier then the standard.
by the way, how much flexing have you all been experiencing with rigid wall conduit? thanks in advance dave holtgrave 5722 sk/tr sailing carlyle lake in southern illinois until the end of the month
What is the issue? The foil is on your forestay, the forestay is connected to your mast head, the foil is going up when the mast goes up. Depending on whether your tie a loop of line in the toggle at the base of the forestay and pull your mast up from that or have an extra person manage the base of the furler as you haul on a halyard is a matter of your style and people available. I do seem to remember that you do not want the mast up with the Harken over the pulpit, keep it headed toward the stem fitting the whole time.
Dave, I built my A-frame from heavy conduit. (This stuff won't bend with a conduit bender!) I bought two 10 ft. joints at Home Depot. They come threaded on both ends and include a union on one end. I cut each one in half so I could flip the ends around and screw the two pieces together. This gives me a 10 ft. A-frame that collapses to only 5 ft. I have a tall rig and this thing does not bend under load. I'll get you some pictures of the A-frame this weekend. I will be dropping my mast in a few weeks and will take some more pictures then if you like.
Not sure I understand the furler question. When the mast is up, my A-frame will be leaning forward on the bow pulpit. At this point the furler is under the A-frame. As the mast goes down, the A-frame stands up and the furler slides aft with the drum wrapped in something to protect it and the deck.
bubba thanks, this answered all my questions and concerns. see you next year at annapolis show. have a good winter dave holtgrave 5722 sk/tr sailing carlyle lake in southern illinois until sunday
Will do Larry. I hope to get down to the boat Sunday. We have small craft warnings in the forecast so, I'll have lots of time to fool around in the slip.
