This guy got a bit too close to the Sydney Opera House, sheared his keel off and rolled. A little more embarrasing than bumping the dock when landing, wouldn't you say? The boat is a former America's Cup contender.
Ooops! My question is, is he floating? In that case there's a whole lot of buoyancy built in....Or, is he sitting on the bottom in the very shallow water.....?
If she's floating someone was thinking ahead.....there's got to be a lot of bouyancy in there, foam or airtight compartments. If you drop the keel on one of our boats, regardless of size, she goes flat, then fills and sinks....
I think they put inflatable bags in the forepeak & under the cockpit. I seem to recall hearing about a 12 meter that had the hull split in half a while back, but the ends stayed afloat long enough for a rescue boat to grab the crew.
I seem to recall film of an AC boat breaking off San Diego (I think) and going down in a flash. One difference was the keel was till attached... I recall the mast disappearing so fast it was scary! The crew all got into the water just barely in time.
When I was in Auckland for the America's Cup, an Aussie told me that no self-respecting Australian would drink Foster's - he said that most is exported using an expensive ad campaign. The preferred beer in Aussieland is Steinlager. Derek
If you look real close at the right side of the picture it appears as if there is the bow of another boat right next to the mast which could be supporting the mast and preventing the boat from rolling all the way over. Also, it appears as though there is an individual standing at the rear side of the cockpit. Don't see any sails or boom either.
I think that is just a spreader, but now that I have a Hobie and understand ALL things Hobie I bet he must have the worlds biggest Hobie Mast Bob (blimp shaped thingy) as I am sure turning turtle must have been a consideration during design. After all they are down under and upside down already!
