I can't wait any longer, I need to splash. And since it snowed again yesterday (Utah), I'm planning on a trip to Lake Mead at the end of this month. Since I've never sailed Lake Mead my questions are: Where is the best place to put in (25 FKSR)? Best marina's or anchorages to stay (I'd like to spend 4 nights each at a different place)? Dangerous rocks or areas to watch out for? Best times for winds? Any info. from those of you that have sailed Lake Mead would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have seen quite a lot of info about Lake Mead at the Trailer Sailor site. I believe they may even organize an April event at the lake. Check it out at trailersailor.com

Scott,
Spring here on Lake Mead is the perfect time for a sailing trip. Things are starting to warm-up but all the powerboaters are not out yet due to chilly water temps.
For starters you will need a chart....Lake Mead is huge and offer many different areas to explore. The lake basically divided into two basins seperated by a canyon called the narrows. The basin closest to Las Vegas is more developed while the basin to the east is much more isolated. I have my boat at Lake Mead Marina on the west shore of the lake. The ramp there is piss-poor! For launching you boat I would recommend Calville Bay Marina. I was in dry storage there for a year and ramp launched my boat from their ramp. I have a wing-keel and had to use a 12 foot tongue exten. to float my boat due to a very shallow ramp. I would advise having some way to get your rig way back in the water due to your fin keel.
The facilities at Calville are nice. They have a guest dock, store and showers you can use. There is a charge to tie-up to the guest dock overnight but it seems hit-or-miss about when they really start charging folks. The marina that I'm at has decent facilities and the majority of the sailboats on Lake Mead are berthed there. They also have a guest dock/store and are close to town if you need stuff. I can't coment on the facilities at Las Vegas Bay but would recommend you avoid that area due to shallow areas and the fact that you will sail/motor quite a ways to reach the main body of the lake.
Regading the weather.....It is very hard to forcast how the wind will be. When fronts move through the area it will blow stink for 2-3 days. The lake can get VERY big and being out there in 25 knots will test your skills. If you are holed up in a cove or at a marina and it's blowing, stay put and go for a hike or spend a day in town. Otherwise many days are vey light and great for sailing all over the lake.
I would be happy to talk with you more about some of the areas to explore or even come out and help you get the stick up and the boat floating. Give me a call if you like and we can cover any questions you still have. (702) 452-0673

Check out the latest issue of Sail. There's an interesting article about sailing Lake Mead in a C250.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll start at Calville and then do some exploring from there. Wish I could be there tomorrow, forecast calls for temperature in the 80's. Thanks again.
