missed only 1 question all day (in Deck General - the difference between temporary and permanent line whipping) in what was, for me, a 5 hour test and including the tests for towing and sailing endorsements. 100 Ton coastal masters exam.
Way to go, Captain! Now I'll feel safer sailing with ya! So I know what line whipping is--what's the difference? (Or do you need to finish celebrating before you figure that out?)
No, I've been going to night school for the last 6 weeks at The Maritime Institute, here in San Diego. Classes were M,W,F 6 PM to 10 PM. That plus working and studying makes for a tired sailor.
Good job Jim. It probably would have been easier to study at night if you didn’t live where it is perfect sailing weather 365 days a year. When do you start the delivery circuit between S.D. and Oahu?
DAve said that he'd feel safer sailing with you! I suspect when we're together it won't make much difference but it is certainly great for the association to have Captain as one of the officers. You did an excellant job. Congratulations!
Good show old Chap! Don't forget to call your insurance company to see if they have a special rate for liscenced professionals......or shop around and see if other carriers do.

My previous boat was USCG documented at 17 tons. I sailed her 5000 miles from San Diego to the Bahamas. That accounted for 190 days at sea. My first boat, I logged 75 days. On Indiscipline 3, my C25, I have 200. Thats a total of 465. If they let me count my sunfish, it will come up about another 100.
I'll need 720 days for 50 ton master near coastal with sailing endorsement, of which 360 needs to be under sail. So I'm a little short. I'll have those days by next September.
With what I have, I'll get OUPV, 50 ton master Inland, and 50 ton mate near coastal. The institute is giving me 2 certificates so I can reapply next fall and get the upgrade to 50 ton near coastal. By the way, "near coastal" is good to 200 miles out. If I only had sailed my C25 I'd only qualify for a 25 ton with this sea time.
I'm going to get Indiscipline 3 up to OUPV standards, put an ad in the paper for instruction, sail or power, your boat or mine, plus deliveries and sea trials.
Even though OUPV is for "uninspected vessels" the USCG still will inspect Indiscipline 3 before I can start chartering her.
Don't know what this will lead to if anything, but its something to keep me occupied in this off season.
Spike has been looking into getting me www.captainjim.com, actually, that is taken. I'll probably be www.captain-jimb.com. However, during the search, she discovered this James Taylor song. It suits me quite well (except the drinking part).
Captain Jim's Drunken Dream by James Taylor
Well you country fools in your one horse town you can laugh at me But it's plain as rain that you've never been down to the southern sea To see me now is like watching a fish on dry land I only wish you could see me down in the islands Mister, that's my home. What a fool I was to leave the only happiness I've known
You see me coming, you wink your eye and call me captain jim And when I don't do nothin' but walk on by you say baby get a load of him
All I need is the sea and the sky and I know where I stand Instead of you hicks straight out of the sticks deciding I ain't a man You'll never understand
Up here I'm a whisky bum but down there I'm a king Sounds just like the angels up in heaven When they sing Welcome home, welcome home Such a sight to see Instead of some salvation army sister Singing "nearer my God to thee"
Now I know that yankee whisky has taken away my mind And I know that rum is the only drink suitable to mankind And I know this tree I'm under is shaped entirely wrong I need to see a gentle palm tree and I won't wait to long I can feel that it's coming on strong
The first cold wind of winter is flapping in my clothes Showing me the way with the direction that it blows Welcome home, welcome home
No Movie? Well maybe you can at least wear an eye patch.
Remember what captain Ron said: "If it's gonna happen, it will happen out there"
Best of luck to you in your captain career. May you always have fair winds, following seas, and rich clients with deep pockets who actually will pay their bills
Right now I'm sipping a cool beverage as a toast to you. I always admire folks who have the balls and tenacity to go out and accomplish what they have been dreaming about.
Captain who? Sorry, you are not alone. Heck, I haven't even seen Titanic yet.....or Matrix and Commander or whatever......I don't have, or think I have, the time to sit down and watch a movie. Only time I watch is when I'm stuck in a hotel room on a layover, and then I only see half, without figuring out the name of it......
