It seems I've discovered another reason to relocate to the Pacific nor'west. Anyone have experience with these clams, recipes, etc ?

Are they shipped to the east coast ?

Oooooooooooh Val, don't let this secret out. Those're good clams.

Spell geoduck 'n say gooey duck.

Anyway, maybe Taylor Shellfish is still shipping 'em.

Well, my experience is limited to the time I tried digging one up... the tide came back in before I could finish my 3' deep by 6' wide 'bomb crater' in the mud and the clam won, it's probably still living there.

Going home muddy, tired and empty-handed, that was the last time I gave it a go. I prefer 'mudding' (groping around in the soft mud) for Washingtons. Pull 'em out like taters, clean 'em up and run them through the meatgrinder for chowder 'stock'.

There used to be a lot of razor clams on the beach down below the ranch... (hence my login) If Geoducks are the 'king' of clams, Razor clams are the 'queen'. Delicate, mild flavor... sauteed and used for fettuccini sauce... (or deep fried).

Google yielded this Geoduck recipe page (among others).

I could be talked into sending some geoducks to someone that might send back some soft shelled blue crabs. Geoducks I can get around here, but no one has blue crabs.

The only experience I have with 'em is I've seen hundreds at low tides, only ever saw one successfully dug. Their neck is so long they get a three foot jump on you before the first shovelful is tossed. It's a big business around here, but most are shipped to Asia.

I have to agree with Bruce, I'll take the littlenecks and the razors and leave the geoducks to the pro divers with their suction tubes.

Someday I guess I'll have to try again... with a clam hook.

Clam hook - piece of rebar about 5' long with a "T" handle on the top and a 90 degree bend about 6" from the bottom. Work down in the mud next to the clam, twist the 'hook' under the clam and pull up on the handle to 'tap' him upwards.
