A group of us will be cruising around the area on a rented boat in late December through New Years day, and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of places to go, things to see, bars, restaurants, etc.
We'll be in the Sanibel, Captiva, Cabbage Key areas, and I wasn't sure how much this area had changed after hurricane damage this year.
Any thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated.

Stay a night at South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island. The last time I was there, several years ago, they had an outdoors hot tub. We sipped amaretto in the hot tub, under the stars, and then took a cool swim in the pool. I enjoyed taking the dinghy across Redfish Pass to North Captiva Island, to get an idea of what a totally undeveloped, natural beach looks like. (One of the hurricanes blew a hole through North Captiva Island this year, and it might be interesting to see how a hurricane can change the geography overnight.) I also enjoyed a stay at Boca Grand. There's a small marina just north of Boca Grand Pass. We rented bicycles and rode into town, where we found an old railroad station that was turned into a shopping plaza. It isn't glitzy. It's just a quaint old Florida town. Wherever you go there are good restaurants. Whenever you stay in a marina, be receptive to meeting other sailors. Often you will meet others, and pal around with them for a day or two, and then go off in separate directions. IMHO, the area where you are visiting is the best part of Florida.

Chris - Wish I could help you out with specifics but I haven't cruised those areas enough, especially since the hurricane. I have heard though that South Seas Resort isn't supposed to re-open until February, call 'em before making any plans to go there.

Below is a link to a west Florida boating list whose members recently planned a boating rendezvous to the same area and there had been quite a few messages about where to go, where not to go and what had changed since Charley rolled through. You might want to subscribe and ask your questions...they seem to be a pretty friendly bunch.... although not near as friendly as the 25-250 folks.

Hope your trip is a good one. Maybe we'll see you on the water (if my wife doesn't drag me on a cruise between Christmas and New Years like she's threatening to do.)

Good friends just this week returned from a cruise in that area. They anchored in Pelican Bay just inside Boca Grande Pass, had good water, but be careful going in as usual. They stayed at Captiva Yacht club which was open and had relatively little damage. South Seas is still closed, had major damage. Stayed at St James City, OK. Did not go to Matlacha. Punta Gorda slowly recovering, friends there say the canals still ahve debris in them. Dont know about Cabbage Key. In general the ICW is navigable, The swash channel North of Boca G is silted up but they went out with board up, drawing three feet, and cleared all. The new channel thru North Captiva is NOT a navigable channel, will probably silt over in due course. You might want to call Tweenwaters Resort (right next to Captiva YC) I believe they are opoen for business and could probably give good local advice. Hope this helps, ron srsk Orion SW FL
