Because of some "from above" leaks the origin of which I am not certain I am moving the item "checking and resealing all stanchions and deck hardware" to the top of my to-do list. Now a real dumb basic question: what type sealant should I best use?

I would suggest Boatlife polysulfide.

I second Jim's recommendation! Whatever you decide to use, stay away from 5200!!

It's not a dumb question...sealant is totally different from an adhesive/sealant. 3M 5200, 4200 and similar are the latter, and once put in place are just about impossible to remove. What you want is a marine sealant (only), such as 3M Marine Sealant, or any of Boat Life Sealant series.
