I have a 1984 Cat 25. About four feet of the port side rub rail is damaged. I would like to replace the entire rub rail on the boat. It is the stock aluminum rail with the vinyl insert. Has anyone out there attempted this? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. tj.

All I can say is you are going about it the right way. Talk to Catalina Direct to get your parts. We tried removing the rubrail, to caulk the screws for the aluminum....Biggest pain we've had trying to get it back in; from what I have heard a new setup is easier to much easier to reinstall....

I had a similar problem. Instead of replacing the entire rubrail, call Catalina Yachts and ask for the parts department. They can sell you a few feet of either the tan or grey rubrail. It was inexpensive. The easy part is removing the damaged piece of rubrail. The new stuff is stiffer and was harder to install. I did only a few feet and it left my hands raw.
Catalina Direct can/will sell you 6 and 8 foot sections of the aluminum frame...the 8 foot section is incredibly more expensive to ship than is the 6 foot section. If you can replace just the short section of the aluminum, as I did for a battle scar on my port side amidships, you can get a whole new rubber from them for $75...I'd suggest the blue/grey...It looks great. Leave the rubber sitting in the hot sun for a couple of hours before attempting to install it...It'll be a lot easier to mold into the frame.
tj - after letting the vinyl "warm up" if you get one end started and then bend the vinyl at 90 degrees to the rub rail and "stretch" it, it can be inserted with much less effort. A rubber mallet will add the finishing touch. Derek Crawford
I just replaced the rub rail and an 8 ft section of the aluminum channel. It wasn't too hard, but the boat was on the hard while the bottom paint was being redone. I let the rubber sit in the sun for a couple hours before I started to work it into the channel. I used a screw driver to work the lower lip into the channel after I had inserted the upper lip. It was toughest at the corners. By the way, the rubber now costs about $100 from Cat Direct. The grey does look good!

Sorry Duane - I didn't know about it until I watched my boatyard expert replace mine last Summer. The whole vinyl rail took him about 30 mins to install! (Although I did help a little...) Derek
For what it might be worth, I replaced my old vinyl insert last summer with the grey...it looks fantastic....and ended up with an extra piece around 13 feet, nine inches long left over. You can have it for the cost of (cheap) shipping if needed. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> Gary Norgan Hemet, CA
Re: catalina 25 rub rail: Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to go ahead and give it a whirl. I called Catalina Direct. Looks like I'll get away with a 6 ft section of rail and a whole new insert. The guy from there also suggested coiling the insert in a bucket of hot water to soften it. Thanks again, tj.
