Just reporting that Orion's folding table retrofit is now complete. I put a cleat on the bulkhead the thickness and width of the folded table. It was a scrap piece of teak I had, I put two coats of cetol on it, since I had the cetol out for another project. Thrubolted it with four 1/4 in. bolts, washers on cabin side, fender washers and locknuts on head side. Had local formica cabinet shop cut table down for fifteen bucks, I would have had to buy a formice cutting blade for my circular saw. I used the piece of piano hinge removed from shortening the table to attache the new shorter table to the bulkhead cleat, had to cut it of course and then file round the ends. Relocated the folding leg to near the end of shortened table. Works like a charm, and allows the table to be easily and instantly raised so I can deploy a filler piece to the starboard berth, leaving the passageway free to the v-berth area, formerly a matter of some discussion (ahem!) with the admiral, who brooks little inconvenience. Will attempt to post pictures of this and other minor mods in due course, fair winds, ron srsk #2343 Orion SW FL
I would like to see some photos of your table retrofit, including detail closeups of the hinges and joinery, if you have a digital camera and the means to post pictures. I am also considering a retrofit of the table in my boat. I don't need such a large table, and it would be nice if it could be made of a lighter material. The OEM table is formica covered particle board and weighs so much that I am scared of dropping it and smashing my foot every time I want to set it up.I
Mine turned out shorter than the one mentioned in the tech tips, mine was 27". I miscalculated and cut 4" off the folding portion, not realizing I could deduct LESS because of the cleat on the bulkhead for fastening, could have gained about 2" on the short side (visualize, VISualize, ron) but on the whole I am very pleased. We are leaving tomorrow for four days in Savannah, never been there, never had a Christmas free in all these years from family matters, this year have a window, so we are going to go. When we get back I will try to get the pictures of table and a few other mods and send them to tech tips. My table is not as nice as the one in there, but it works fine and the whole outfit cost fifteen bucks and some time, which is part of the fun. Merry Christmas to all and God Bless the Forum and all the fine helpful folks on it, Ron srsk #2343 SW FL
Dear Adamb, my wife the electronic part of the family has a digital camera, I will try. I am a contemporary of Jefferson's, and most comfortable with the quill pen, but will see what can be done. Right now on crutches from a bad ankle sprain the other day, so do not wait by the computer, but I WILL remember, fair winds, ron srsk Orion SW FL
Hope that ankle heals soon - take it easy, no sweat on the photos - just curiouse how long (you said 27") but that seems to imply that you set the table rather low on the knees - or am i missing something
