Hi all, we had a nice sail here yesterday in calm seas, light winds and overcast skies. Photos soon!
I sailed 240 degrees magnetic at about 4 knots while listening to the Chargers game. When it was over, I turned around and sailed back (I was quite a ways out by that time!) Looking for whales, dolphins, etc. No luck. Back in the harbor, I saw my friends on the S2 I'm going to crew with in the Newport Ensenada race. I sailed over and challenged them to race around the offshore red bouy. That was the last time they were ever close to me. They were sailing with their 110% because the 160 tore and is at the sailmakers. It was certainly a day for a big genoa. With my 135 I could literally sail circles around them.
After I rounded the bouy I sailed over to them, got into a formation upwind of them, and promptly sailed away like they were dragging an anchor. We have to do something to speed that boat up! He has no racing equipment at all, not even telltails. Indiscipline points higher and is much faster. We did not get to try a downwind leg against their nice blue and white gennaker.
Then I saw Doug and Mo on Valkyrie. I set a course to intercept and tryed to catch them. They were motorsailing back to the harbor. Eventually I caught up but only after firing up the Honda. They had a good day, seeing whales breeching plus numerous dolphins. A great day for their onboard guests.
Afternoon wind was decent. Big winter storm coming, glad we made it out yesterday. Little worried about tidal waves, it should have arrived by yesterday afternoon if it was coming.
We were thinking of going sailing yesterday and today.
And that's about all we were doing ... thinking about it.
With the exception of the first and last lines (highlighted for your reading pleasure) the rest of the marine forcast looks great. <font face="Arial Black"></font id="Arial Black"> <font size="1"><font color="blue"><font face="Arial Black">NEARSHORE MARINE FORECAST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLEVELAND OHIO 926 AM EST MON DEC 27 2004

I was wondering if any of the Great Lakes has frozen yet. I was talking to my father in Milwaukee and he said its been -10F low and 4F high for several days. I know Lake Michigan will freeze in some unusual cold years.

Had a beautiful downwind sail today. There was a steady, although rather chilly, 15 knot wind blowing straight down the ICW. Only raised the mainsail and enjoyed a fairly flat ride. Unfortunately, the channel is too narrow to tack in this area (ran aground trying...twice, had to keep raising the keel) and the water is veeeery low, so had to motor back upwind. But it was still better than staying in the slip and I certainly am fortunate to not have to be on the hard for half the year. Forgot to bring the digital camera though.

We haven't had cold enough temperatures long enough for a freeze. But when it happens, Erie will be first. Usually the Western part of the lake, around the Islands, will freeze over, it takes a number of consecutively cold days....
There are tons of stories, both mythical and true regarding driving over Lake Erie to get supplies in the winter... I've walked out on the ice a couple of times to chat with fisherman.... Not something I'd want to do daily.
