I just replaced all my potable water tubing and was amazed at the amount of algae growth. Has anyone come up with an amount of chlorine or other substance that I may add to the holding tank to prevent future growth.
Does this effect the taste of the water much? (gotta have my fresh coffee in the AM)
Ick! I don't even want to thing about the algea in my lines - the little floating garden in my water is bad enough <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>(we don't drink the water from the tank, but we do cook with it). I heard bleach works, but I'm not sure how much to put in - I don't want to poison myself with bleach in the process of cleaning my water. HELP!

I believe bleach would work, I guess I could use a swimming pool chemical tester for PH & CL2
I only use water from the tank for washing things, not for drinking. I keep strategically placed water bottles(gallons, liters) in various locations around the hull depending if I need to lower the bow, cure a list to port, make the stern sit a little,...etc. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone. (Who came up with that morbid phrase?)
If you are treating the tank and system to kill and clean then 1/2 a cup of bleash is good. once the bleach has been added the solution must be pumped through the water facet untill bleach can be detected at the sink by odor. Let stand for 24 hours. Then a realy good flush must be done. Once the system is clean one Teaspoon added to each tank full is enough to keep it fresh. One another note bleach isn't the only product you can use. Some live aboards use a cup of vodka or jin. I wonder is tequela would work ???
Just a note to Douglas. My degree is in Enology, wine making. There is no known pathogen that can live in alcohol. Just got to get your precentage right Matt EC Rider C25 fin almost off of the hard in CA
Just a cup??? We actually, (this was very late at the local watering hole mind you) talked about having the local establishment owner buy 16 extra gallons of Vodka. Just add Ice and a mixer. We usually don't take any week long trips and all of our water is out of a bottle anyway....In case anyone is wondering, its about a 300 dollar venture and that is the cheap stuff.
