As scary as these pictures are, they don't even touch the enormity of this incredible disaster--not to mention its breadth. Somebody sent me a WAV file shot by a guy who was eventually swept away, with up-close footage of other people as they are being overwhelmed and swept away. The beginning is gripping, the sounds are frightening, and the end is heart-stopping.

Yesterday, someone at work brought in a newspaper from Thailand (his wife and family are from Thailand) and the pages were filled with much more graphic pictures that what is shown here...It's a terrible trajedy and that's an understatement.

I spent a week in Phuket/Patong Beach in the late 80's. I doubt that I would even recognize the place.

One thing I found interesting... As the mass of water moved ashore, the current around those anchored boats probably exceeded the boats' hull speeds by multiples. That alone was probably pretty exciting--your boat wants to get up and plane, the water is rising, the anchor is pulling the bow down... Then it all reverses as the wave retreats, like a giant rip-tide. Better than being on the beach, though!

Did anybody see the clip about the guy on the 50' multihull? He made it through the tsunami and then effected a rescue. He lives on his boat and is confined to a wheel chair!

There are reports from aid workers that tribesmen on some Indonesian islands are shooting arrows at the choppers. I'm really not surprised... My daughter and son-in-law are Peace Corps volunteers in a village in Mali where most villagers have only seen aircraft about once or twice in their lives--light planes high overhead scouting for gold mining sites. A big Sikorsky flying low would blow their minds!
