For the last 10+ years we have been bottom painting with VC17. Every fall the bottom looks like it does in these photos. We've lightly sanded and repainted. I don't find any blisters and the worst areas are in the pictures. I think the white areas are from where the PO had sanded the bottom to far, but I really don't know. To my knowledge this boat has never been in salt water and we have no plans of moving her to the coast. I can really use some advice, and you guys have been great in the past. Thanks

I'm very envious of the boats sitting around her for their nice smooth clean hulls. Help

I don't know what I've got wrong. Bruce (CLAMBEACH) was able to see the photos of the trailer. I posted them on YAHOO and then linked there. I wonder if the user needs access right to YAHOO to view the pictures? I'll repost after moving the pictures to a different location.
Sorry

RL,
Seems like more than a few of us have had problems posting photos from Yahoo.
I switched to Shutterfly and was able to post fine from there.
You do have to make the site public in order for them to show up here.
Its maddening when you see them perfectly well on your monitor and no one else can.

Charlie,
Thanks, I went to Shutterfly and redid the post. Is there someway I can delete the prior YAHOO based posts from the board?

Just delete the whole post.
You only need one anyway.

that looks really terrible. Here's what Indiscipline looked like after 25 years in salt water and 2 years on the paint when I bought her

I just had her hauled this morning and looks just as good. A total of 4 years in salt on the paint job 7x24x365.

The PO did a complete bottom strip, full epoxy encapsulation, and 4 coats of paint (not VC-17). That Interlux Micron Extra.

I think its time you did that. Some of the members can surely provide instructions.

It doesn't look like your paint is sticking at all to the bottom. Maybe your trailer rollers are causing the problem (or making it worse).

RL,

This looks to me like there isn't any base coat where the VC17 paint is coming off. Your only solution is to strip the hull completely and start from scratch using VC Tar as a base coat, then adding the VC 17.

Is the paint coming off in an area where jack stands would be located? If so, the individual who originally painted the hull probably didn't remove the jack stands to prep under the pads. I had this problem, although my top coat is not flaking off like yours, but gradually wearing away. I suspect that the multiple coats on the hull are the "flaking" culprit.

When I did the full strip to gelcoat, sand, apply epoxy barrier coat, I didn't see any blisters until all the coatings had been removed and I was looking at bare gelcoat. I think you'll find the same. Blisters are more prone to happen in fresh water than salt water.

Another thing that can cause peeling and flaking like that is the failure to remove the mold release wax before doing the first bottom job. That wax can last a long time, and should be removed with acetone or a similar solvent. Then, as stated above, a proper primer should be applied to the bare gelcoat (or epoxy). With many primers, the first coat of antifouling paint should go on before the primer fully cures--follow the directions carefully. (Interlux discontinued my favorite primer because people weren't following the directions and their paint was peeling off. The directions were to paint over it within 45 minutes of priming--while the pimer was still tacky. Used properly, it was great!)

All that said, I have some of the same "acne on my bottom" --this was to be the winter of the new bottom, but it became the winter of the new home. Next year.......
