It only has the big commercial ports in it, Miami/Port Everglades/Jacksonville etc. so pretend you're a football field or two long, but it still is fun to play with for those of us that dream long distance......
This would be a nice to have for planning trips on the Great Lakes. My new Magellan chart plotter may have a similar capability. I'm setting up this week to work with it.
Al, I've talked about it for several years and as we didn't get a cruise last summer, would like to make this years summer cruise a bit extra so looking at a fairly agressive Lake Superior cruise.
It would be over 500 miles and include 12 routes and about three weeks of time on the water. Start will be at the base of Keweenaw Bay, cruising the Peninsula, crossing to Isle Royale, around Isle Royale and over to Grand Portage, Mn. then down along the coast and a crossing to the Apostles, Wi., change crews there, and cruise for a few days, then make way back to Keweenaw.
One week road time between Texas and Michigan's Upper Peninisula.
Tentative float plan was done last night in about a half hour using OziExplorer which included downloading and installing the chart from ChartPlanner, setting thirty waypoints and making twelve routes.
Final float plan will include probably 150-200 waypoints as I get down to the smaller area charts and notations of alternate refuges and plans are included.
I use Oziexplorer to build a cockpit chartbook which has a chart(s)for each route(days worth of sailing). Waypoint and route data and alternate havens are printed on the back and then lamanated to store under the cockpit cushions where they are easily and quickly available.
While I've had to do major revisions of float plans because of weather, if enough days are added then the original float plan usually works out.
You hit it on the head Dave, 90 mi of coastline without much to offer in the way of havens, though I haven't looked at the smaller charts yet.
A beat.... I don't mind a beat too bad if the destination is on the corner of the beat. This of course will require night sailing as it is an 18 to 36 hour passage. Any thing less than 2.5 vmg... and its time to motor. Weather prognosticators don't often see well past 36 hours anyway, sometimes not 4 hrs
That's pretty cool Oscar! Thanks for the heads up. I just checked the data for a trip to Fernandina Beach that the Admiral wants to do. It's not often she wants to take a boat trip. So I want to be as accommodating as possible. I'm thinking Superbowl weekend will be a good time to get away. The roads are going to be insane around here. But there is plenty of water to get away on. I lost out on the lottery the city had for docking downtown on The Riverwalk. They are only allowing 81 vessels. And the free city marina with floating docks... only 30 boats for that lottery and pay $360 for security.
Hey Arlyn, why don't you make the first leg in late June and join us on the Keewenaw cruise? Al can tell you more, but I have been told and my limited LS experience tells me that late June and early to mid July Lake Superior can be fairly gentle but late July and August things can be pretty stirred up. I plan to be back in the North Channel by July fourth. If you want some chat about Isle Royal we sailed around her last summer. Launched at Grand Portage and sailed out for 10 days. I'd be glad to tell you about some really nice anchorages. Bring all your consumables to the park, there are shops at Windigo and Rock Harbor, but the transport and energy surcharge is 24% on top of the 6% Michigan sales tax.
You will love the solitude and the stark wilderness. Let me know and I'll share some Pics.
Hi John... It might be late June when we get started this year as my son is getting married the second weekend of August. Do you have your plans made yet?
I did get the smaller charts downloaded and have looked things over a bit more. Not as many havens and anchorages as the North Channel for sure.
I can appreciate the thoughts on fuel and supplies... have heard that before. And... I might need an extra propane cannister as baths will likely come out of the teakettle rather than an afternoon swim.
I'm very interested in your thoughts on Isle Royale. It looks like it has several good anchorages.
I've also taken a quick look at the Apostles...and have not been enchanted about them yet and may scratch them from the intinerary in trade for some Southern Superior coast. There doesn't seem to be an abundance of anchorages for what seems to be a high traffic cruise ground coming out of Wi & Mn. I'd much rather be at anchor than at a marina and the Southern Superior Coast looks better suited for anchorages, am I correct?
I do have the challenge of working out a crew change someplace. Does the southern coast have a favored direction to sail? Lake Huron winds are very unpredictable in direction in August with a slight favor of north west.
Buoy history data for the North Lake Huron buoy support your statement that winds are stronger in August than July for Lake Huron as well.
Will look at Lake Superior buoy data for a prevailing wind.
