The paint on my five year old Evinrude outboard prop has bubbled. I suspect it's the result of occasional cavitation. I sanded the old paint off (the prop is aluminum), and the prop itself is still in good condition.
Is there a special type of paint I should use to repaint the prop? Can I use the same touch up paint I use on the lower unit?
I realize that a good primer coat is important, and that the primer and paint will adhere best if the two are formulated to be used together. I just don't know if a special paint is made for props that would better withstand the stress of the cavitation process.
Is there really a reason to paint it? I would go to Home Depot and look at the MANY different kinds of Rustoleum spray products, they have really broadened their product line lately.
Most marine dealers/stores will have the proper aluminum-compatible primers and matching factory paint... (if you're inclined to make it 'Bristol'). A quick West Marine search on 'outboard paint'... yields Tempo paint at $13/can.
Last year touched up my props with some spray paint from WM that was specially formulated for lower units. Believe it was a Mercury product. Anyway, it wore off in short order. Looked good for the season start.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. Paul, It sounds like you experienced the problem I anticipated - the paint wore off quickly. Did you use an aluminum primer? How many coats did you spray on?
I just cleaned 'em up and painted them. Put on a couple of coats. Probably not the most efficient, but looked good for a while. Paint had originally peeled back from a couple of blade tips a ways, so just cleaned it up and painted.
