I seem to recall that Derek figured out a simple and cheap way to install a backstay adjuster ... maybe he'll see this thread and comment ... if not, it might be worth an email to Derek to see what he did.
Yes it will work. I have owned the Johnson unit before and they work very well, just remember that you will still need a line running from the transom up through the 5th sheave, and a purchase made off to the transom to pull that line. Less purchase is better, we tend to over do it. mine
