Drove to the local WM saturday to use the last $10 coupon and buy cable and crimp connectors for the on-going electrical repairs. Found out SOSPenders (Auto-inflate w/harness) on sale for $140. Could not help ourselves; now we own two of those and an automatic flasher for my daughter's PFD. Of course now we need to rig up jacklines to justify the 10lbs of metal added to the PFD.
Would you call "going to WM to use your last coupon and earning another one in one trip" a good day or a bad day.
Question: I want to attach light, whistle, etc to the harness. Looking at it, seems hard to imagine how I could attach anything and not have it covered up by the inflated bladder (I'd hate to dig under the bladder while bobbing, fearing I'd puncture it). Has anybody done this?
At least you guys have a "local" WM. The closest one to us is either in Santa Barbara almost 2 hours south or Santa Cruz just a little more distant to the north. When we go to WM marine I don't think we have ever got out for less than $100 and usually somewhat more, there is just too much pent up demand. All that great stuff in one place! Plus we always seem to find something on our wish list on sale.
I'm not very familiar with your neat life saving devices (I should be, I have a 50 ton Masters license) but, I wonder if you could attach the thingamabobs to a short "painter"? Or short line, in other words, maybe attached to the shoulder area ( a lasso on the harness?). I really nice attachment might include some kind of velcro wrap or bag to keep the whistle, light, etc. available and yet hopefully not always bangin' about and getting caught on stuff.
I have 2 0f the manual pull models w/harnesses. If you carefully open the velcro on the left side you should find a whistle tied to the inflation tube. This will be exposed when it inflates.
I don't know that there is enough space in there for a light. You might be able to pin a light to the outside, but I'd worry about getting smacked with it when it deploys. You should check with the manufacturer for advice before trying to do anything like this.
WM is just one exit down from the house.... Its hard to stay away on the weekends, especially when there's a sale going on. I picked up 2 of the Sport Seats ($20 rebates for each one) and one of the SOSPenders automatic models.
Our BoatUS is directly across the street from the entrance to our development. Sometimes that is a good thing...sometimes that is an unfortunate thing. There's not enough trip time to talk myself out of buying whatever it is that I've just impulsively convinced myself I HAVE to run over to BoatUS to buy.

I went to WM to get electrical parts for the portion I am doing at home. The PFD's were unresistable and I know the Oriental store does not carry PFD lights.
Now that I have confessed, sems like a good idea to ask the manufacturer. I did notice the whistle in the manual after I wrote. I found a very small flasher (it has a water detector on a 2-ft wire so attach to the bottom of the PFD) for my daughter's PFD, I'll ask them if I can attach one to the top of the bladder and let y'all know what they say.

I can't tell from your description where the light sits on the outer cover. However, that bladder opens VERY quickly, and I'd be concerned about getting whacked with the light. If you can afford the expense of test-firing one, do a field test. Borrow an adult sized stuffed toy, put the PFD on the critter & manually fire it to see what the light does. If not, simulate one by carefully opening the cover & see where the light might hit. Either way you'll get practice repacking it, which is a good thing.
I'm assuming your daughter's PFD is a non-inflating type, so this should not be an issue. Good luck.
Consider WM as the "Big Boy Toy Store" and then you can justify to your wife. Then, of course, she is entitled to shop for furniture. Where is my retirement check going?
My brother gave me a SOSpenders auto inflate with harness for last Christmas. (see http://www.catalina25-250.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8241) The directions state to familarize yourself and put it on and iflate it. Which I did to make sure there were no leaks. Left it up all night. Don't wait to get in an emergency to try it. It does inflate rapidly but not to the extent of creating a missle. I had a light on my old PFD that I tucked into the pocket which holds the extra CO2 cartridge. It would be hard to get out. But better than not having one at all in the middle of the ocean in the dark and the crew looking for you. The re-arm kit was $20. And it was not difficult to repack.
