Hi All, My wife is the commodore of our local sailing club, http://www.lakeyosemitesailing.org/. Our club has a cat22 fleet. The question my wife and the other board members have is does your club have anything in its by-laws concerning different fleets. For example how are fleet activities such as regattas handled? Does the fleet captain have to report to club meetings? How is insurance dealt with at various functions? I saw a copy of the Fresno Yacht club by-laws in regards to fleets, it looked vary complicated. Any input would be appreciated, her board meeting is tonight so a quick reply would be appreciated. Either here or at my home or work email BrigitteMatt@cs.com work MLoeffler@losbanosusd.k12.ca.us Thanks in advance. Matt
Our fleets do not function as a club squadron, we can be as autonomous as we like. We have no reporting requirements unless we want something from the club. Our club supports fleet activities in any way it can, provided facilities are available. The Vice Commodore is in charge of the regatta schedule. No event happens that is not sanctioned by the VC. That sanction is given after the BOG votes on it. When that occurs the club assumes responsibility for the event. The club provides insurance etc. If an event is not appropriate or lacks adequate expertise and preparation the club refuses it.
When I wanted to host the nationals I had to get permission to offer the venue, after the association said they wanted to accept my offer then I had to make a preliminary presentation to to get on the long range calendar, I then had to make a final presentation 6 months later with duty assignments, notice of race, promotional plans and the commitment from the association to attend. That made my dates permanent. All the while other fleets are jockying for dates and our commitments to the Central States Sailing Association must be met as well as the annual club regattas.
Frank, Thanks for all the information. Brigitte and I were just looking it over. We also went to your NSA site. Wow, that is some club house and grounds. If I ever get to Kansas I'll b e sure to visit it. Thanks Again Matt
