Okay, I'll admit it...I'm 53 years old and have finally done it for the first time. I don't know why I waited so long. In fact, I liked it so much, I'm looking forward to doing it again. But when I watch the movie "Cap'n Ron" the second time, I'm going to make popcorn too!
Hmmm... (All IMHO) I found it only "semi-funny", I'd give it maybe a 6 out of 10. Worth a watch, but once was enough. For my taste, the plot got somewhat carried away with itself and unravelled from about 1/2 to 3/4 the way through the film. A common failing in a lot of comedies... crossing the line from clever to silly.
Kurt Russell did a great comedic job tho, he really 'made' the movie.

There was a plot???
I don't know how many times I've seen it (I really like it ), but if you count up all the bits and pieces I've seen while channel surfing, it comes out to alot!
I like the scene when she's (the boat) running from the pirates with a "bone in her teeth". I think she's a Hutson Force 50. I've been looking at Yachtworld too long.
And also when the kid shows up with the eagle tatooed on his chest.
Or the scene when Capt.Ron throws the boat in reverse and pulls up to the dock.
Let me put us back on topic. Cap'n Ron is a staple of my on-board DVD library. Along with The Hunt for Red October, and more recently Master and Commander. I keep a variety of others and plenty of books.
As for the movie, I enjoy it every time I see it, and Mary Kay Place is dreamy. The homage to Ethel and lucy in the shower is great. I happen to enjoy the dopey plot and though it is implausable that the coast guard would be right around the corner, the ending has it's shallow Disney tensions which keep the film fun. (nothing too sinister)
For my money, the go-rilla discussion is a scream. I love the movie, and made it manditory watching for my Venture Crew before we sailed out of Miami down the Keys. It's amazing how many times the go-rilla scene gets re-enacted in real life. If you haven't seen it, get a date and have a good time. RL
Here's the bottom line for me. I spend 6 weeks every summer living on my boat and cruising the North Channel and Lake Superior. Most of the other cruisers I run into are nearly elderly, no kids, no one to keep the cruising lifestyle alive after them. Maybe there will be a grandchild or two, but most of the "families" I encounter are on trailable power boats. So..... When a movie no matter how dippy, and yes Frank, Martin Short stretches it a bit for me too, shows a family taking up the cruising lifestyle under sail,I am all for it.
We got 4 inches of snow last night, and will be getting more tonight and tomorow. If it continues this cold through spring, Al, Arlyn and I will be dodging Icebergs in Lake Superior this June.
I recall we had a discussion about good sailing movies some time back. Perhaps we could develop a page in the tech section on sailing films reccomended by members. The same could be done for sailing books and tech books.
The movie "Wind" is a great sailing film about americas cup racing very good on boat racing scenes. but the love story part of it IMHO was very lame. My wife liked it though I guess that what counts.
