Things in Cayman are slowly getting back to normal after Ivan. We have just finished all the repairs to PS2 including all new chainplates and standing rigging. Just sharing a few photos from last weekends sail to Stingray City.
Arrrrrggghhhh... (tropics envy). It rained 3-1/4" here this weekend... and it's not quite finished yet. I suppose I might feel differently about the tropics if I was sitting in the middle of a hurricane. OTOH, we have earthquakes here, at least you know when hurricanes are coming.
I moved to Grand Cayman in 1999. I used to live in the UK and work for Simspon Lawrence (now Lewmar) but escaped the grey days to come out here and work for Harbour House Marina www.harbourhousemarina.com as their chandlery manager. The C25 is perfect for Cayman, as the nearest island is totally upwind over 80 miles away, (Little Cayman) and it's such a hard slog even the much bigger boats hardly ever bother. The North Sound (where most of the sailing is done) is a protected lagoon about 30 square miles, but sometimes less than 4 feet deep so having the wing keel really helps get places others can't go.
Nice pics. Nice place. Honeymooned there (first wife) in '89. Did the Stingray City snorkel trip and the submarine ride, among other things. Wonderful place!
I was able to fly in on July 4 1996 after chasing drug runners all night. We gassed up and the darn airplane started right up and away we went to Panama. I seems that my airplane NEVER breaks down when I want it to!
The engine I use is a 5hp 20" which is the longest Honda do in that size. The vast majority of my sailing is done in relatively protected waters, so I don't really need anything more meaty. We get a maximum of 5.2 knots in still conditions. Of course if I venture offshore it's not so good, but after trials we found that even a 8hp 25" outboard will cavitate in those conditions.
I only really motor in and out of the canal and if there's no wind at all, so the 5hp is a good compromise on something that after all is meant to be a sailing boat.
Thanks for the pix. We're expecting 8-12" more snow here tonight; it's great to see that there's still sunshine & warm weather/water out there. At least this time of year the snow doesn't hang around too long....
