I would like to announce again that John Vining, and now Alyn Stewart, will be trailering up to Chassell Michigan on 22 June, to join me for a cruise-tour on Lake Superior, around the historic Keweenaw Peninsula, in beautiful Upper Michgan. Our target launch date is 24 June. Arlyn will only be sailing with us for a day or two to Copper Harbor and will continue on to Isle Royale. I understand he will be cruising Lake Superior for about a month. John and I will sail around the Peninsula making several overnight stops including Huron Bay and the Huron Islands. I expect to return not later than 1 July at the latest. Other stops will include Eagle Harbor, Manitou Island, LacLaBelle, Traverse Bay, and if time is available, Lanse and Baraga. There is a casino in Baraga which may be of interest for an overnight stop.
If you would like to join us on this cruise-tour, please let me know in advance so I can arrange storage and/or parking for your truck, trailer, and any other requiremnts you may have. This is an informal rendezvous with no particular activities planned except cruising and comraderie. I expect several other boats from my club, not necessarily Catalinas, to join us. My email address is aeckhart@chartermi.net
I am jealous (No way we can make it, no trailer for starters). I went to grad school at Michigan Tech in Houghton, haven't been up there since 86 or so. It is beautiful up there and would be a new pespective from the water.
Boy that sure does sound tempting. I was actually thinking "not this year, but maybe next. Since I'm in Ohio I thought it might not be too far, so I did a Mapquest from Columbus to Chassell. 720 miles!!!
Wait, I've got an even better idea! I'll trailer to Lake Huron in the Detoit area and sail around and meet ya'll! That would be a really, really good summer.
John Vining and I have broached the idea of forming a cruising club. He may have been kidding in his initial post but I think it's a great idea. Since he lives on an island in the St Marys River (flows between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, I proposed an inaugeral cruise to the North Channel on Lake Huron next year. I would think this is within your travel limits been. How about sailing up to the Mackinaw Bridge and beyond next year Ilnadi?
It's a small world isn't it. I suspect Tech grads can be found almost anywhere, even on the Catalina 25/250 web site. Perhaps if bringing your boat up here is a problem, you'd like to come up for a few days and sail with me. Come during the Stawberry Festival in Chassell (second dweek in July)and I'll treat.
What a great idea! The cruise this summer and the cruising club. I will support your direction and hope it all comes to pass. One of the purposes of the c25/250 NA is to promote sailing our little vessels, and the idea of a cruising club certainly will do that.
Wow, This topic is now cooking along on two separate threds. Al, I certainly wasn't joking about forming a cruising group and am enthusiastic about leading a cruise of the NC next summer. Keep the conversation going. Ben, I make the trip to Sault St. Marie every summer. 506 miles R.T. from Mount Vernon OH. Perhaps you could plan on joining us for a North Channel cruise in 06.
Ben, I was a little foggy last night. I meant 506 one way to Sault Ste. Marie MI. I teach school and by mid June, I'm on my way to Neebish Island for the summer. Neebish is at the west end of the north channel. Should we plan a cruise for 06, I would reccomend that we meet in Blind River Ont. There is a good launch ramp and marina there with lots of transient dockage. from there a very nice 7 day cruise could be planned.
Since we are close, I'm in Mount Vernon during the school year, we shoud have a central Ohio C25 breakfast rendezvous. I'm trying to get my friend Roger (also of Mount Vernon) to join the group. He just purchased a C250. I'm sure there are a few others if we troll around.
That sounds like a great idea. John; the 2006 cruise AND the C25 Central Ohio breakfast rendezvous. Before I commit to the 2006 cruise, however, I'm definitely going to have to run this by the wife.
I'm planning on putting my boat in (hopefully this weekend). You should come down after I get her in and sail with me.
How close is Mount Vernon to Toledo? My son and his wife live there. Maybe I can attend the breakfast as well. I'm planning to head down to see them the first fweek in May (summer vacation starts for me). The wife will still be teaching school.
Ben,
The Chassell cruise is this summer (2005). North Channel is a look ahead at 2006.
Thanks for the heads-up, Al. While I know I can't make Chassell this summer, the North Channel in 06 may be possible. I'd love the chance to broaden my horizons on some big water.
Al, the Toledo area is about 2 1/2 hours from Columbus, Mount Vernon is about 50 miles N.E. of Columbus. IOW, it's easier to get from Toledo to Columbus rather than try the zig-zag back road way to get to MT. V. I think Ben might be a good candidate to find us a place to meet. Perhaps we could put a few extra boats in the water at Alum and do a little sailing. There is a couple I ski with on National Ski Patrol who are looking for a sailboat. IMHO they would be perfect for a C25. I would like to invite them also.
