I am repainting the bottom of my '89 WK for my first time. I have had the boat for three sailing seasons. The local boat dealer said that the previous paint was Pettit Hydrocoat and recommends going back with the same. I sail an inland lake. I have sanded most of the bottom, but have to still do the wing keel which has some bottom scrapes from bouncing along the shallow lake bottom a few times.
The boat is on my trailer, resting on the keel, so I can't tell what the condition of the bottom is until I raise it up. I would like to be prepared with all the materials that I need because the lake is 40 minutes away. What should I expect? If there are bad gouges what should I fill them with and do I need to prepare the surface with anything special prior to filling? If there is lead exposed do I need to prime it with something?

Steve,

A few years ago I had a problem with the wing keel "pealing" - the encapsuling material was flaking off. I cleanded the exposed metal with wire brush and filled in with fairing compound. After sanding and painting it looked good as new.

Having said that however, the bottom of the wing on my boat has never been painted and is still factory white.

I went to HomeDepot the other day and got a can of Bondo brand Fiberglass repair putty. I used it to fill some spots on my keel the. I was very impressed with how easy it was to work with. It was cheap and readily available, not common in boating supplies! I put Hydrocoat over the repairs and it painted very nicely.

Your keel, I believe, is lead. If bondo is used on cast iron, it bleeds (almost immediately). I am not sure what it does on lead. This is one of the reasons that we usually fair stuff with an epoxy slurry or mixture---not because epoxy is fun to deal with, fair winds, ron srsk Orion SW FL

Hi all. First time responding to the forum although I've followed it on and off for nearly a year. Kudo's to all those responsible for it's success.

My wife and I purchased our '89 wing keel last spring. A few years of projects lie ahead of us, but this season I also plan to strip what's left of the bottom paint down to the original gelcoat, fill the dings in the keel and then add new barrier paint and a good abalative bottom paint. Lot's of great advise from this forum but a key question. The C-25 manual recommends not sanding the gelcoat on boats '88 or newer and the use of "no-sand" bottom paints. The 5-year no-blister "warranty" is long by, so just how serious should we take the no sanding recommendation? Completely, i.e. use paint stripper only or is judicial sanding (wet/dry) tolerable? Or is sanding essential to ensure the barrier paint adheres to the bottom? Thanks...

"Bondo brand Fiberglass repair putty"

It is epoxy slurry, note Bond Brand not Bondo. If it falls off i will let you know
