I purchased my boat in Aug. 2002. The bottom had been re-done (P.O.)in early 2002 with epoxy barrier coat after fixing the blisters. Then the P.O. used some kind of ablative paint (so he said), but he couldn't tell me what kind. (A boat yard did the job, not the PO personally).
In 2003 I painted the bottom with Trinidad SR and now it is time to do it again. For the most part the paint worked well and held up well.
In a few places the paint appears to have flaked off. Pressure washing the growth probably helped the paint flake off when the boat was hauled out Friday.
#1 What would cause the paint to flake off? #2 What should I do to make the new paint adhere better in a few places like this?
If Trinidad (a modified epoxy) was painted over ablative, you have a problem. You can paint ablative over epoxy, but not the other way around. I think you are going to have to strip the Trinidad and use an ablative -- or strip everything and then paint whatever you want.
