I have recently installed in my c250 cabin a car mount for my XM satellite receiver that I use in my truck. The car mount comes with an antenna that attaches to the mount with a connector requiring about a 1/4 inch hole to pass through to the deck. From all I’ve read, the very thin wire that runs to the antenna “block” cannot be cut, as any solder joint will stop the signal to be transmitted to the receiver. I thought I could use a through the hull clam, but the wire is so small it would leave it exposed exiting the clam to the possibility of being snagged and broken. Should I just drill a 1/4 inch hole through the hull, pass the wire through and fill with 4200 and mount the block in 4200 above the hole?? Any ideas?
For your information, I have a Skyfy2 receiver that has the built in FM transmitter. The great news is that the transmitter is powerful enough to transmit to a Sony boombox that can be place inside or out of the cabin. No wires, no holes cut for speakers and great sound!!
I've got an identical setup on my boat. I mounted the antenna on top of the rudder with a patch of velcro and ran the wire throught he transom boot where the steering bar exits the hull (I've got wheel steering). I then ran the wire along the hull/deck joint to the control head, which I mounted on the same box I built to house my FM/CD player. Works great.
