I have determined via one of the previous threads, that I do in fact have a tall rig with a standard sail. My guess is that the PO set things up this way to accomodate the bimini. I like it because I'm tall, however , I have no idea what this means as far as boat performance, balance, etc. Any insight is appreciated as always.
Guess it's a small world - Tally Ho! is a 1981 TR/SK # 2241. When I purchased it I was told it was a standard rig. First thing off the bat I replaced the mainsail with a brand new sail. I was a bit puzzled when the sail would not hoist all the way to the top of the mast and stopped two feet short. I will say that the new sail made a difference from the old one - but from my point of view it's the head sail that's the real engine of a Catalina 25. Bottom line is a 12.45 sq ft difference between the sail area of a main SR and TR. I consider myself fairly decent at trimming sails and the offset of a new main SR v. old main TR just about evened out. I just don't see the difference - but I'm not much into racing.
Is your gooseneck above the mast slot opening? How did the PO get around this?
Esteban, When I hoist the main to the top of the mast, the gooseneck is above the opening slot. Then when I apply some downhaul, the gooseneck actually is half in the slot and half in the groove for the sail slugs. I'm guessing the only thing stopping you're sail from going to the top are the stoppers, which can be repositioned. I'm waiting for some mast gates to arrive, that should remedy this. This arrangement certainly gives me lot's of headroom but I don't know what I'm sacrificing in the way of performance. I'm also not a racer, I'm mainly just curious.
