I have seen many posts about adding an access port for the pintles & gudgeons. I am looking to put an instrument there and need to know the depth about mid-way down on the back wall of the cockpit, under the tiller.

Could someone who has already put in the access port tell me that depth?

I realize that I am going to cut the hole anyway but am trying to guage the best place to put the hole so I can both access the pintles & gudgeons and have the depth the mount my instrument.

I don't have an answer to your question, but how about deleting four of your identical posts to clean up the page?

Sorry about that. I had some issues with my network and that must have been the result. Don't know what happened but all cleaned up now.

There is not much room between the cockpit side of the transom and the transom inside. I am not sure how deep the instrument you need mounted is, but be sure of the depth. I am going to the boat tonight and can measure. Dan

How about unscrewing the middle bolt of the gudgeon and running a smaller (1/8" - 3/16") long drill bit all the way through from outside the transom? Like you said, there's going to be a big hole there anyway!

When I did this job, I think I measured down from the tiller to the gudgeon bolt pattern on the transom, and then marked the same distance down in the cockpit. For side-to-side location, I centered my hole between the cockpit seats.

You may have a problem trying to remove a screw from the upper gudgeon. My "89 WK has a threaded brass plate inside the transom with a lock washer and nut after that. There is no way I could remove those screws without drilling the big hole. I just replaced my upper gudgeon last weekend. Nerve wracking drilling that hole!! You have no more that 1.25 - 1.5 inches between the innner and outer layers.
