Is it harmful to an outboards' alternator to run the engine without a load (battery) connected? My 1987 'Rude 9.9 Yachtwin has electric start & alternator, but also has a pull start. I or someone else (boatyard) could conceivably start the engine without a battery, which is why I'm asking.
I doubt it would hurt. About the only risk I can think of would be if you had the alternator connected to electrical equipment, but no battery. Then there might be a chance of it putting out enough voltage to damage light bulbs, for instance. If running an outboard alternator without a load were likely to damage anything, we'd have heard a lot more about it by now!
Just make sure you tape the ends of the wires coming form the alternator so there is no direct contact without a load between them. Alternators do like ot feed on its on generated power.
I'm not sure if all are the same...but on the Honda, hookup to a battery is necessary to get any output, which means that inadvertantly touching the disconnected wires together would have no effect and they won't run lighting, etc. without a battery in the circuit.
