I am days away from raising the mast on my new boat (at least new to me) after moving it and I am thinking about replacing the blocks in the Vang, Reefing and Mainsheet systems so I can run them to the cockpit. I have already replaced all the lines and halyards but I am wanting to get thoughts on blocks and vendors.
I was all set to go Harken but now I am thinking about Lewmar blocks now and was wanting to get some thoughts on folks that have gone that way. I would also like to here how some of you have run the vang to the deck organisers back to clutches to the cockpit.
I am open to other block vendors - just those are the only ones I have looked at.
I use a Schaeffer 505 SS for my Spin Halyard I use Garhauer series 25 ball bearing blocks at my mast base. Garhauer series 25 cheeks on the boom. The old 4:1 mainsheet tackle for the vang. I ran it through the deck organizer and back to a clam for a while. (I would not want a "trimming" line in a clutch, can't toss it off quick enough) But now am back to a long tail and have no problems setting it or casting it off. I use the Harken 3" mainsheet blocks for the mainsheet but would go AirBlocks if they weren't dumping the 3" stuff. I use an airblock for my backstay adjuster so it does not weigh it down. See above. I love my Harken 272 stacked deck organizers. The Spinlock triple clutches are the best for our deckspace and line size.
I use a lot of Harken blocks and cam cleats. The light weight reinforced plastic blocks are interesting. I think they have the best selection of deck organizers, but pay attention to the working load ratings.
Garhauer stuff looks very strong, well made, and reasonably priced. Not widely available where I am.
Also check out Ronstan. I used not to be impressed with their parts, but lately they've been coming out with new blocks and cam cleats as nice as Harken but less expensive and some are stronger. My halyard turning blocks at the mast base plate are Ronstan.
I have Spinlock (sp?) line clutches. One of them cracked, but I may have been using too large a line in it at the time. Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with them.
Click for larger view

I generally use Harken blocks, but I have purchased Garhauer track cars due to the price. I've stayed away from Ronstan because the products looked cheap to my eye. I did buy a new Schaefer fiddle/swivel/cam cleat block for my mainsheet on eBay for $46.00 (normally $120.00 retail).

I like Garhauer blocks for the deck-level rigging. Strong, relatively inexpensive and look good. Lightest in the world? No. If you want to spend money on the high-tech carbon-fiber stuff, spend it aloft. (IMHO Stuff)
