Remember, this is not my boat, its a 1980 S2 8.5

OK, after a bill of $3650 for a new top end (new head, new cylinder liner, new piston, new rod - left the crank, main bearings, and transmission as is) yesterday we are installing the new motor. Its going well. We used the boom and mainsheet to lift her off the dock, and right into the companionway, down onto the quarterberth. Slid the motor back, and lifted using 2x4s to make an inclined plane and as levers. So far so good. Motor aligned, shaft bolted on, motor mounts tight. I am hooking up the exhaust system when there is a tremendous crash, then another, and finally a 3rd.

I bumped my head. My first thought was the engine fell. Then I thought we were having an earthquake. Neither was psooible.

Up the companionway to find we've been hit, hard, by a big errant powerboat. An old, trashed 30 foot Chris Craft express POS. The kind where I see the owners about 2 times per year. The collision was not at a drift either, with power on. Now keep in mind our boat is backed into the slip, but fully inside and securely tied with spring lines even (for stability when lifting the motor).

The pulpit went through his windows, smashing them. I believe his anchor hit our bow, holing it, but well above the water line. The force on the docklines was so great the dock was destroyed (did not pull the cleat out, pulled the dock apart). The forestay has some damage.

He had 4 people on board, including like a 5 year old who was crying. He said "Don't worry, I'll pay for the damage, and I'll see you later." Then they went out to continue their trip. Unbeliveable! There was glass everywhere.

So we call Harbor Police, they call San Diego Police, and we call the marina people. We make a full report.

5 hours later he motors back, all his damage cleaned up, and gives Ken, the owner, his business card, promising to pay for all damage.

The good news was, after all the excitement, we got the motor finished and it started up on the first turn of the key. Side problem, one of the motor mounts was stripped and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
