We were boat shopping at Shilshole marina yesterday watching some of the J-24s out on the bay. Weather was pretty iffy. The kids and wife were quite firm that there would be no sea trials for us. Watched as a few of the J-24s sailed to the dock. I was impressed with the skill they showed sailing to the dock in very gusty conditions, but I questioned the idea of sailing in a tight marina in those conditions.

You mean, like, don't put every sail you have up if your hat won't stay on your head? Maybe an airbag or two would be in order if you're going to play that game...
ok, I have never been on a knock-down or sinking of anything as big as a J24 or C25. I have flipped dinghys and kayaks. Here is what I do not get: why do you hang on to the boat while the last 2 inches is bobbing on the surface? It seems to invite being sucked down or snagging your clothing. If the dude does not know how to swim or cannot swim in those clothes, I'd ask why he is not wearing floatation (probably in language more suited to sailing anarchy).
Given the water temperature was in the low 50's and the boat sunk in less then 5 minutes, rational thought was probably impaired by sheer panic. Why he was trying to pull off the rudder while the boat was sinking is beyond me. Maybe he was particularly fond of that hiking stick?
